Learning
Philosophies and Proverbs
To follow the wrong
teacher,
is like being born from
the wrong mommy's tummy.
Learning a hundred things is not as good as
practising one thing well;
Practising a hundred things is not as good as
mastering one thing perfectly.
How and when does one
reach his state of understanding,
and what is the standard by which the teacher judges the pupil's
ability.
Art calls for complete
mastery of techniques,
developed by reflection within the soul.
He who thinks, but does
not learn...is lost.
He who learns, but does not think...is in
great danger.
The truth in combat is
different for each individual in his style.
1. Research your own experience for the truth.
2. Absorb what is useful.
3. Reject what is useless.
4. Add specifically what is your own.
If you think you're the
best, your growth will be mediocre,
If you think you're
mediocre, you will always be at your best.
The three stages of
learning:
Learn - to
consciously learn a technique.
Apply - to practice
the technique until you can successfully apply it.
Dissolve - when the
technique becomes automatically a part of you.
When an archer is shooting
for nothing...he has all his skill. If he shoots for a brass buckle...he is already
nervous. If he shoots
for a prize of gold...he goes blind, or sees two targets - he is out
of his mind!
His skill has not changed
but the prize divides him, he cares - He thinks more of winning than shooting, and the need
to win drains him of power.
Just as yellow leaves may
be gold coins to stop the crying children,
Thus, the so called secret
moves and contorted postures appease the unknowledgable martial
artists.
Shall I teach you what
knowledge is?
When you know a
thing, is to recognize that you know it.
When you don't know a thing, is to recognize
that you don't know it.
This is
Knowledge!
To seek learning - is to
attain knowledge.
To seek the Tao - is to
rid oneself of ignorance.
The more one knows, the
more there is to un-know.
Thus, increase to
decrease.
When the blind lead the
blind,
They will both fall into the water.
Ten thousand rivers flow
into the sea;
The sea is never
full.
Learning coordination is a
matter of training the nervous system,
And not a question of training muscles.
The outstanding
characteristic of the expert athlete is his ease of
movement,
Even during maximum effort.
There is nothing much in
this art; Take things as they
are.
Punch when you have
to punch; Kick when you have to kick.
Before I studied the
art,
A
punch to me was just a punch, a kick was just a
kick.
After I'd studied the
art,
A
punch was no longer a punch, a kick no longer a
kick.
Now that I understanding
the art,
A
punch is just a punch, a kick is just a kick.
All vague notions must
fall before a pupil can call himself a Master.
